An Ode to Dr. APJ Abdul Kalam

Life is a difficult game. You can win it only by retaining your birthright to be a person. - A. P. J. Abdul Kalam

You know how great a person is when your WhatsApp inbox is flooded with messages from people unknown to him reporting his death.

This is probably the saddest news for the nation. Dr. APJ Adbul Kalam, a space pioneer, rocket scientist, teacher and ex-president of India, has passed away. But as much as I know, he was a great human being, more than anything else.

They say that people who are dedicated to their work, die while they are working. The same thing happened with the case of Dr. APJ Adbul Kalam, since he breathed his final breath while he was at a conference in IIM, Shillong. He loved to speak to students, and died while doing so.

If a country is to be corruption free and become a nation of beautiful minds, I strongly feel there are three key societal members who can make a difference. They are the father, the mother and the teacher. - A. P. J. Abdul Kalam

Born on 15th October 1931, Dr. APJ Adbul Kalam lived for 83 years. But in the initial stages of his life, he went through a lot of hardships. Graduating from the Madras Institute of Technology, he specialized in Aeronautical Engineering. But that was where it all started.

When Dr. APJ Adbul Kalam worked in ISRO, he was ridiculed by fellow staff, since he dreamed of the ‘Evolution of ISRO’ into one of the world’s best space facilities. What ISRO is now, is all because of the hard work of Dr. Kalam.

Even as President, Dr. Kalam lived a simple life. He never visited many international countries (unlike the present PM), but instead, focused on the development of the country. Kalam believed that India would become a superpower by 2020, but sadly he did not live long enough to see it.

Kalam was also a spiritual person who believed in God and Prayer.

God, our Creator, has stored within our minds and personalities, great potential strength and ability. Prayer helps us tap and develop these powers. - A. P. J. Abdul Kalam

Though he was old, Dr. Kalam was still active in his work. He kept visiting schools and colleges and kept talking to students, inspiring them. He once visited the college I was studying in, and though his speech was quite long, he had everyone’s attention.

In spite of his high position, he always resorted to a simple life and did not mind drinking tea at a normal tea stall. Above all, Dr. Kalam lived up to everything he said, preached, and taught us, including this.

We should not give up and we should not allow the problem to defeat us - A. P. J. Abdul Kalam

We can mourn about it, but the best we could do is to work to make his dream come true. Rest in Peace, great soul, the nation will always be grateful to you!
