The Preamble of the Indian Constitution has become a Huge Lie!

WE, THE PEOPLE OF INDIA, having solemnly resolved to constitute India into a _1[SOVEREIGN SOCIALIST SECULAR DEMOCRATIC REPUBLIC] and to secure to all its citizens:

JUSTICE, social, economic and political;

LIBERTY of thought, expression, belief, faith and worship;

EQUALITY of status and of opportunity;

and to promote among them all

FRATERNITY assuring the dignity of the individual and the _2[unity and integrity of the Nation];

IN OUR CONSTITUENT ASSEMBLY this twenty-sixth day of November, 1949, do HEREBY ADOPT, ENACT AND GIVE TO OURSELVES THIS CONSTITUTION.

This was what I was taught by my History and Civics teacher when I was in school, 10 years back. But somehow, I felt it was not true.



India is the only country in the world which offers jobs and seats in universities based on caste and creed. This is one of the main reasons that has chained us to being a developing nation. A student who has scored 99% cannot get a seat in a reputed university, but a student who has got 60% can happily walk in just because he belongs to a community which has a ‘quota’. In which part of the world do you call this justice. My Civics teacher used history to explain this, but how long are we going to sit in the past?

We voted our own leaders, we made them stand tall amidst us, but they have forgotten all this. India was the only nation which was termed as a social, secular, democratic republic and the whole world respected it. But now, this seems to be just a statement, with no life to it. Indian citizens are supposed to have “LIBERTY of thought, expression, belief, faith and worship”. I do not say that, the constitution does. But our leaders have taken the wrong turn. Headlines in Newspapers say that people are being converted from one religion to another. This sparks communal riots, violence, and all other forms of nonsense. How can people be even converted? Are they SI units? You can convert millimeters to meters, dollars to rupees, but people change religion only out of their own desire. When the constitution promotes it, why don’t the politicians? What other business do they have rather than safeguarding the peace of the nation?

Indians still wished each other Merry Christmas on December 25 even though it was attempted to be declared as Good Governance Day. This sordid idea itself hints the presence of a very, very, bad governance. And then there is the Parliament, the Supreme Court, and all other bodies which live on the tax money paid by the poor hardworking citizens, who struggle to make both ends meet. Do they not know what the first page of the constitution says? Do they not know what it means?

The man who stands before the world and speaks of India’s Development is clueless about all this. Or he knows, and he is ignoring it. What is the point of development when there is no unity? What is the difference between Indian politicians and terrorists if they continue to do acts like this.

Let the preamble of the constitution be removed, or altered. Let is say that India is NOT a social, secular, democratic republic. Let it say that Indian citizens do not have the LIBERTY of thought, expression, belief, faith and worship. Maybe then, I could remain silent. But as a citizen of India, it is my right to raise this question, and it is the right of every other citizen as well. The first page of the Indian Constitution is now no different than a huge lie. We have all been so ignorant. Haven’t we?
